Sailing into the 2nd Quarter!

Week of November 7th

Room 22

This upcoming week is the start of the 2nd quarter. Students will return to school on Wednesday. Since it is a short week, students will be focusing on sight words rather than word study words this week. See the attached homework schedule for this short week. Be on the lookout for a sign up genius that shows more volunteer opportunities in the 2nd quarter! Also, mark your calendars for the 2nd grade American Education Week experience. We will be participating in a thanksgiving themed STEM activity on Monday November 14th at 8:30 am. Parents are invited to attend, see the attached flyer for details.

In November, we will begin working with double digit addition and subtraction. To be successful in this unit, It is important for students to have a solid understanding of addition and subtraction facts. Please encourage your child to use reflex or flashcards at home! The students can access through the helpful links tab. They just need to type in dbecker for the username to find our class. Their password is their 4 digit birthday (month and date).

We will also begin our study of maps next quarter. It would be great for students to bring in maps of places they have traveled, it could be places such as amusement parks or different cities. We will be reviewing maps in class to identify map key features and cardinal directions.

Ways to extend learning at home:

*Ask your child to find the missing number in addition or subtraction number sentences: 9 + __ = 19 14 - 3 = __

*Have your child identify a text to text connection with a book they are reading (we did this with the Kevin Henkes books last week) *Ask your child to explain how we are setting goals to become better writers

Looking Ahead

Math- This week we will focus on double digit addition with the support of manipulatives.

Content- Students will begin using knowledge of map keys and cardinal directions to read maps.

Reading- This week we will begin working on creating text to world connections to the stories we read in class. Encourage your child to think of a way the story they are reading connects to themselves or another book they have read.

Writing- Students will be using their writing skills to create and design their habitat projects! We will also begin looking at our small moment writing to edit for proper punctuation and capitalization.
