Soaring Into Our First Full Week!

Hi Parents!

Even though we have only had two full days of school, we have already started learning a lot!

We used the story "The Kissing Hand" to help us adjust to school and begin developing a caring environment in our classroom. Students have also begun learning many of our daily routines and are already developing a sense of community through our daily morning meeting exercises! We have already created our first graph as a class- we graphed how each of us gets to school, including Miss Becker and Miss Benteler!

In the first full week of school we will set the foundation for many of our daily structures:

Reading: In reading, students will begin to learn the structure of Daily 5. This will be the framework that helps guide our balanced literacy instruction in the classroom. Students will start by learning "Read to Self". Be sure to ask your kindergartener how to "Read the Pictures"! We will start by using wordless picture books to develop concept of print and reading skills. This is extremely important for all students to develop a sense that they are readers! Please encourage your child to model "Reading the Pictures" at home!

Math: In math, students are beginning to develop number sense and a sense of our guided math structure. We have already begun to develop number sense through our daily calendar math and playing some "The Kissing Hand" related math games. This week, we will begin using many different math manipulatives to help us prepare for small group math instruction!

Content: Over the next week, we will also develop an understanding of our goals for the year as kindergartners and work together to develop our class rules. We will also get to know each other by engaging in a variety of games centered around our names! We will also get a chance to learn about each other as we share our All About Me bags this week.

Parent Reminders: *If you received a reminder to turn in any important forms, please return those as soon as possible.
