Welcome Winter Week Ahead
Week of December 12th
Room 22
This week we focusing on double digit subtraction with regrouping. This can be a very complex process for the students to complete independently; it would be beneficial for students to reinforce these concepts at home. Please continue to practice fast facts at home as well as completing double digit subtraction problems.
In social studies, we have used project based learning to begin our study of American Indians. We first worked in small groups to use online resources and nonfiction texts. Then we used the information we learned to create models of American Indian homes using recyclable materials. As a class we then created Powhatan Indian groups to document important facts we learned. This week we will be learning about the Lakota/Sioux Indian group. As we learn about each group, we will describe each tribe by their home, food, daily life, clothing, geographic location, and transportation. As we continue with our project, you will see student work samples on twitter and on our class homepage.
In reading, we are working on identifying problems and solutions as we read stories. We will also be identifying key features of nonfiction texts.
Ways to extend learning at home:
*Ask your child to complete double digit problems with regrouping Ex: 34 47 -19 -29
*Have your child explain the steps of double digit subtraction in words or drawings
*Students can use strategies we have learned in class to help them: -draw dots to show the number -use a number line to count down *Ask your child to retell the story identifying at least two thing that happened in the story
*Have your child share one thing the Powhatan Indians used to build their homes.
