Sliding into Winter Break

Week of December 19th

Room 22

During this short week we will get ready for lots of nonfiction learning in January. This week we will focus on learning about arctic animals and practicing "stop, think, paraphrase" to help us practice recalling facts from the story in our own words. Our next writing unit will focus on information texts. We have been getting ready with our American Indian mini books and we will begin highlighting important parts of nonfiction texts this week!

In social studies, we will finish up our study of the Lakota/Sioux Indian group. As we learn about each group, we will describe each tribe by their home, food, daily life, clothing, geographic location, and transportation. Keep a lookout for more student work samples on twitter, instagram, and on our class homepage.

In math, we will continue to build on our knowledge of word problems by asking students to answer word problems using double digit addition and subtraction skills.

Ways to extend learning at home:

*Ask your child to complete the following word problem: I had a stack of 18 candy canes but 12 are now broken. How many do I have left over?

*Have your child explain the steps of double digit subtraction in words or drawings

*Students can use strategies we have learned in class to help them: -draw dots to show the number -use a number line to count down *Ask your child to read nonfiction text of their choice and have them identify 2 facts they remember from the book.
