Welcome to 2017!

Week of January 9th

Room 22

Thank you so much for all the sweet gifts and cards during the holiday season! I am so lucky to work with such outstanding learners each day. Thank you so much to all the parents that helped make our winter party a success! I am excited to start another great month of learning in room 22!

In social studies, we will finish up our study of American Indians by learning more about the Pueblo Indians. As we learn about each group, we will describe each tribe by their home, food, daily life, clothing, geographic location, and transportation. Students received a study guide on Thursday. The test will be Thursday January 12th. Students will need to need to apply knowledge of all 3 tribes (Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo). We will review in class but it would be beneficial for students to review the mini books they created, the study guide, or complete the attached graphic organizers for each tribe.

In math, we have started learning about graphs. This week we started learning about pictographs! Next week we will focus on creating and answering questions about bar and pictographs.

In reading and writing, we are focusing on information texts. We have been reading nonfiction texts and writing like scientists!

In the new year, students will begin to start writing their own homework in their agenda each day. I will continue to post a copy of the homework page here just in case.

Ways to extend learning at home:

*Ask your child to use tally marks to collect data and create their own graphs. We have worked on this each day in class! Students could ask the family a question such as what is your favorite season and create their own pictograph. *Ask your child to read nonfiction text of their choice and have them identify 2 nonfiction text features (bold words, headings, table of contents)

*Have your child complete the attached graphic organizers as additional review of the 3 American Indian tribes.
