Even with the snow last week, we were still able to make the most of our time in the classroom. Students loved using their knowledge of 3D shapes to create models of their own Monuments (like the Egyptian Pyramids) using gumdrops and toothpicks. Look at our class webpage to see some examples! Students loved trying to create their own structures. It was great to see students applying their knowledge and using teamwork to complete the project together.

This week we will have our Big Staff Basketball Game at 7:00 pm on Friday at Riverside High School. Come out and support our school. Students are encouraged to dress up during our spirit week: Mismatch Monday

In math, we will begin our study of fractions. We will start with lots of hands-on practice creating and dividing shapes into equal parts. In science, we will continue our study of matter. We will be doing some experiments to describe how matter can change states.

In language arts, we are working on reading and creating our own poems! We have practiced creating If I Were Poems and Question Poems. Next week, we will learn a new type of poem and begin to edit our completed poems. We will be using the book fair to help us collect book donations for needy students in our county.

Ways to extend learning at home:

*Ask your child to try and divide shapes such as circles or squares into equal parts *Ask your child to look for alliteration (repeated beginning sounds) in books they read at home

*Ask your child to describe the difference between solids and liquids

Looking Ahead

Math- This week we will begin learning about fractions and equal parts.

Content- Students will begin the study of solids, liquids, and gases.

Reading- This week we will practice reading poems to learn poetry elements and brainstorm our own poetry writing ideas.

Writing- Students will be using their poetry skills to begin their own poetry books; this week we will be learning about Recipe and Letter Poems.
